If you have fallen behind on your mortgage payments, you will end up getting phone calls and letters from your mortgage company or bank.  When you get the letters, do not ignore them!  You will find they offer several solutions to your monetary issues with the mortgage including mortgage loan modification programs.  What these programs do are modify your current mortgage into a more affordable plan.  Sometimes they will revalue your home and make your mortgage reasonable based on that value.  Sometimes they will take your overdue payments and tack them onto the end of the loan. Either way, the payments are usually something easier to handle.
