The Flying Scotsman – A Design Icon
If you were to ask someone to name a steam engine then the chances are that the Flying Scotsman would be the first words out of their lips. It’s a world famous design icon and ploughed up and down between London Kings Cross Station and Edinburgh Waverley station for years. When it was introduced, it was normal for trains to stop for half an hour in York. It allowed the passengers to have lunch and the crew to be changed. The thing that allowed the Flying Scotsman to make the journey uninterrupted was the design of a coal tender which had a passage way in it. This allowed the crew to change without needing to stop the train. They also introduced a dining car on the service for the comfort of the passengers.
