Backpass Rule Undoes Arsenal in Champions League Match

When I saw what happened in the football match on Wednesday between Porto and Arsenal I wondered what some of the previous generation of goalkeepers would have made of it all. When people like Bert Trautmann played the game, there was no such thing as a pass back rule. This rule is to help prevent sides slowing the game down by continually passing back to the goalkeeper. It means that if a ball is passed back the goalkeeper can only pick the ball up if it was headed back, not kicked. In last night’s Champions League match Porto was allowed by the referee to take a quick free-kick after Arsenel goallie Lukasz Fabianski picked up Sol Campbell’s back-pass. The referee took the ball from Fabianski and gave it to Ruben Micael, who picked out Falcao while Arsenal were disorganised to score the decisive goal.
